Sweet Treats Celebrate 100 Years!
On March 6, 1912, the first Oreo cookie was sold in Hoboken, New Jersey. The famous treat, most often seen with a glass of milk by its side, is currently sold around the world, and yesterday marked its 100th birthday.
Another “sweet” organization celebrating its centennial this year began in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912. Girl Scouts of America will celebrate its 100th birthday on Monday. Be sure to grab a box of Samoas or Thin Mints in the organization’s honor!
Not to be outdone, the port has a centennial treat of its own. Last year, the port invited bakeries throughout the port district to submit entries in a centennial cupcake contest. Eight establishments entered as port staff and commissioners carefully selected the entry that best reflected the port’s centennial in addition to tasting delicious. Made by local bakery, Simply Sweets, the two flavors chosen were Sea Salt Caramel and Spiked Oats.
Join us for a Centennial Tour, Port Re:Port and other port community events to see for yourself how sweet 100 years can taste!
