Construction on trail segment along NW Lower River Road begins in June
Port of Vancouver USA project connects existing trail segments
VANCOUVER, Wash.—The Port of Vancouver USA Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a contract for construction of a trail segment that will connect existing sections of trail along State Route 501/Northwest Lower River Road between the port’s administrative offices and Farwest Steel at its May 22 board meeting.
The $880,300 contract was awarded to Keystone Contracting Inc. of Ridgefield, Washington, and includes clearing, grading, paving, construction of elevated boardwalk, landscaping and irrigation.
Construction on the .33-mile segment of trail is expected to begin in June and be complete by early 2019. The project is funded through port dollars and a $500,000 Federal Highways Administration Transportation Alternatives Program grant.
The new segment of trail is part of a countywide trail system that will eventually connect Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Washougal to Frenchman’s Bar Regional Park in Vancouver. The port is responsible for two additional miles of trail, from Farwest Steel to the Vancouver Lake flushing channel. Once completed, the remaining portion of trail will connect to an already-existing segment that extends to Frenchman’s Bar.
