P7110342_webThe new decant facility that will handle debris swept up from the port’s terminals is close to completion.

More than 800 acres of active industrial and maritime operations make up port property, which means a lot of terrain to keep clean and free of debris. The new decant facility, located at the port’s Terminal 3 adjacent to the bio-filtration pond, will help manage the immense stormwater and solids collected on the terminal that improves water quality. One sweeper load of material will collect anywhere from 50-300 gallons of water needing treatment.

The concrete pad will collect materials from on-terminal sweeping equipment and separate water from solids. From there the water is channeled through an oil/water separator, through another filter and discharged to the city sewer system.

The heating unit has been installed, which will keep the structure from freezing in the winter. The concrete is complete, as are all underground utilities. Remaining work includes the installation of the roof structure, complete with columns and lights.

The project is being completed by the port’s maintenance team, who began construction in April. The entire construction is projected for completion by July 31.
