Port’s Carbon Footprint Shrinks
From 2008 to 2010, the Port of Vancouver purchased green e-certified Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to reduce the carbon footprint associated with 60 percent its electricity consumption. The purchase avoided nearly 7 million tons of CO2 emissions associated with conventional energy consumption, the equivalent of taking 790 cars off the road annually, or 9.9 million travel miles. In recognition of its green energy purchases, the port is certified as a member of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership Leadership Club.
By 2011, and again in 2012 the port was able to purchase RECs equivalent to 100 percent of its estimated annual electricity usage for the buildings in which it controls its utilities. In recognition of its green energy purchases, the port is certified as a member of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership Leadership Club.
Since 2008, the port has purchased 21,915 RECs and saved 15,395 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. This is equivalent to the emissions from the electricity use of 2,305 homes for one year or 1,725,897 gallons of gasoline consumed.
By purchasing renewable energy certificates sourced in the Pacific Northwest, we foster clean energy development in our region. We look forward to the long term benefits reducing our carbon footprint will have on our community.
