Wind-tower-122012-web(VIDEO) Tracking the ever-evolving wind energy market is a focus of the port and a significant reason Vancouver, Washington has become one of the premier handlers of this oversized, specialized cargo. Port investments in two Liebherr 140 metric ton mobile harbor cranes, enough land to stage and store massive towers, lengthy blades and heavy nacelles – paired with a highly trained labor force has made the Port of Vancouver USA the port of choice for many of world’s largest manufacturers.

This month for example, the port’s Berth 3 has been busy unloading wind blades and towers from China and beyond. These wind components will eventually go on to produce renewable energy throughout the United States.

“The port’s commitment to safely and efficiently handle wind cargo is a sizeable contribution to the local economy in the form of jobs and business revenue,” said Alastair Smith, port senior director of marketing and operations. “The return of this commodity not only creates hundreds of work hours for members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, but promotes renewable energy and a diverse cargo mix here at the port.”

2014 is looking bright for not only wind energy cargo at the port, but cargo numbers overall are seeing an increase. Good news for our community!
