Learn about tugs and barges April 3 and barley malting April 10

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Join the Port of Vancouver USA, Shaver Transportation and Great Western Malting in April for lectures on barging and barley malting – two distinctly Northwestern industries keeping goods moving and brews flowing around the region and world.

Lectures are free and open to the public, and will be held at the Warehouse ’23 Event Space, 100 Columbia Street, Vancouver.

From Farm to Table and the World – Tugs and Barges, the Workhorses of the Columbia-Snake-Willamette River System
Tuesday, April 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Few commodities traveling the Columbia-Snake-Willamette River System would reach their destinations without the help of tug boats and barges. Since 1880, Shaver Transportation has been a family owned regional tug and barge company serving customers and ports across the Pacific Northwest. Shaver’s tugs and barges operate along 465 miles of river, from the mouth of the Columbia River near Astoria, Oregon, to Lewiston, Idaho, traversing eight navigation locks on their journeys.

During this lecture, Shaver Vice President Marine Operations Rob Rich will introduce you to the people who keep cargoes moving on the river system and share how barges transport grain, logs, sand, liquid bulks, containers and many other cargoes in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner. You’ll also learn about the small but mighty tug boats; with their impressive engines, they can move ships many times their size.

Great Western Malting – Tradition and Innovation in Malting
Tuesday, April 10, 6:30-8 p.m.
Great Western Malting (GWM) has been a fixture in our community and a Port of Vancouver USA tenant since 1934. Its port facility steeps, germinates and roasts barley, a critical ingredient in brewing and distilling. It is the largest malting company in the western U.S., supplying the highest-quality malted barley to nearly all Pacific Northwest breweries and most breweries in the western U.S., as well as brewers, distillers and food processors in Canada, Japan and Mexico.

Attend this lecture and hear from GWM President Mike O’Toole, Malt Innovation Center Manager Teri Fahrendorf and Malt Innovation Technician Amanda Kozina as they share the process of taking barley from field to brewery. They’ll also introduce you to their Malt Innovation Center, which uses industry-leading techniques to develop exciting new malt products.

Space at each lecture is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, call 360-693-3611 or email RSVP@portvanusa.com.
